Heating & Cooling FAQ
Get the Answers from Our McKinney HVAC Services Team!
As a McKinney HVAC services team, we see a lot of different issues and get a lot of questions from our customers. If you have a question, you may not be alone in wondering about it. Here are the answers to some of the most frequently-asked general heating and cooling questions we receive!
How Often Should I Change My Air Filter?
Your air filter is one of the simplest, cheapest, and yet most important parts of your HVAC system. However, when it gets dirty, it can cause all sorts of problems including reducing energy efficiency, causing odors, and even possibly causing your system to break down.During summer months we recommend replacing your filter every month if you have a one-inch filter. Wider filters can often last up to 3 months. But if you have a lot of filter-clogging factors, such as household pets or a lot of dust, you should change your filter even sooner.
What Size System Do I Need?
Getting the right size system for your home is extremely important. A system that’s too large won’t cool or heat your home properly and will waste energy by “short cycling.” A system that’s too small won’t be able to heat or cool your home properly, and will run almost endlessly to try and do so. Everyone’s home is unique and your demands will be different than others, so it’s best to consult with a skilled HVAC professional in order to determine what size system you need.
How Should I Set My Thermostat?
Many people want to enjoy comfort in their home, but they often believe that it leads to tremendous energy bills. The good news is it doesn’t have to. Having a system that’s properly-sized for your home, has a good SEER rating, and is properly maintained will be far more energy-efficient than most older systems. If you have a multi-story house: set your upstairs thermostat to your ideal temperature and your downstairs one to two degree warmer for best efficiency. Reverse this when heating during winter.
Do I Have to Maintain My System?
Maintenance is an extremely important part of HVAC system ownership. A system that’s well-maintained is not only more energy-efficient, but will work better and longer with fewer major breakdowns requiring expensive repairs. Likewise, most new systems require annual maintenance for their warranty to remain valid. Maintenance should be done at least once per year, and twice is best: once in spring and once again in autumn.
What’s That Rattling Noise?
There are lots of different ways you could experience a rattling noise in your HVAC system, and some are worse than others. Most of the time a rattling noise has to do with a component in your system not being tightened down all the way. It could also be a loose component, like a screw or a nut. The best way to figure out exactly what’s going on with your system is to have it inspected by a McKinney HVAC services professional. Their experience can provide you with a more detailed and precise diagnosis as well as be capable of fixing it.
Why Won’t My System Turn On?
There are plenty of reasons why your heating and cooling system won’t turn on. First, check your thermostat. If the screen is blank, the battery could have died or the power that your system is connected to may have gone out from a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. If your thermostat is still running, make sure it’s set to the proper modes, the fan is turned to “auto” and the temperature is set correctly. If everything is set correctly and your system won’t start, it’s possible that it may have overheated or your coil may have frozen over. The best way to find out is to speak with an HVAC professional and have them diagnose your system.
