As you could probably guess, this is not a great thing to be hearing from your HVAC unit! Clanging and other loud noises are a sign that something is loose or broken in the system. You’re going to want an HVAC pro to take a look at it.
This could be a mechanical issue with the system’s motor, or it could be something simple like a loose belt or part. While the parts can be cheaply replaced, a motor could be more costly to repair if it has failed completely.
This sound is usually associated with escaping air. If your ductwork has a leak, you are going to be wasting money from that inefficiency. You’re already paying for that air to be heated or cooled, so why not make sure it gets to where it needs to go in your home! This needs to be repaired.
When HVAC systems turn on, a low hum is very common. This just means the air is flowing through the system. However, if it’s loud or accompanied by buzzing or clicking, it may be another sign that there are loose parts in the system.
